Frequently Asked Questions

Contra Vision offers a choice of one-way vision products: White One-Way Daytime Privacy, White 24/7 Concealed Vision and Mirror films. These products offer one-way vision privacy during daylight hours. Blinds or curtains are still needed at night.

Contra Vision® Privacy Window Films™ are an attractive and clever way to hide the view into rooms, with applications for all types of residential and commercial buildings.
We offer one-way vision products which allow excellent vision from inside the building, while maintaining natural light coming into the room. We also offer two-way privacy products, which offer privacy into a room but with no view out.
As well as providing privacy, an additional benefit is a reduction in solar heat gain, glare and UV radiation. This can help offices, public buildings and homes to be more comfortable living environments with lower air conditioning costs and lower CO2 emissions.

Any of our one-way vision products will provide day-time privacy and allow a view out, except for the Frosted Two-Way Privacy product.

Our two-way privacy products will offer privacy at night.
All one-way vision products are reliant on there being more light on the outside than inside. Therefore these products are not ideal for night-time and should be used in conjunction with curtains or blinds where possible.
If a combination of one-way vision and night-time privacy is required, you should try Contra Vision® White 24/7 Concealed Vision™ films – to achieve night-time privacy these products are illuminated from the light inside the building at night and the positioning of the light is important.

The objective is to have as much light as possible shining onto the window film from the inside. The window film is translucent and will glow slightly when light passes through it, which helps to obscure the view through the window.
Ideally the light sources should not be directly behind the window to maximise the effect – e.g. light bulbs should be covered with shades to prevent point sources of light from being outside the field of vision. Night-time privacy is improved by shining spot or flood lights from the side or below the window – see image below.

Yes, almost all of our range has achieved Class 0 Building Regs. and Class 1 BS476 Pt7. If you have a question about a particular product, please get in touch.

Yes, all Contra Vision® Privacy Window Films™ block and reflect sunlight, offering a reduction in solar heat, UV and glare. The reduction depends on the product.  As an example, a 30% perforated film will cover 70% of the window area, this gives up to 70% reduction of UV light and glare, and up to 60% reduction of solar heat.

We have perforated and non-perforated products for internal and external application.

The durability of Contra Vision® Privacy Window Films™ ranges from 3 years+ to 10 years.

The durability stated in our technical data sheets is for unprinted and untreated material correctly applied to an inert, vertical substrate, subject to Mid-European weathering conditions.

Incorrect application methods, inadequate window cleaning and preparation and incompatible window treatments may reduce the expected lifetime of the applied material. Mechanically sustained damage, chemical damage and UV-degradation to material may also reduce expected durability. Perforated window films can be especially vulnerable to damage along the edges and corners, which may lead to premature failure.

Usually our films are supplied on a roll at 760mm (30″), 1220mm (48″), 1370mm (54″) or 1520mm (60″) wide. Our distributors may be able to quote you for cutting down the products into sheets.

There is an extremely low probability that Contra Vision® Privacy Window Films™ will exacerbate existing imperfections in glass and cause it to break. We receive 1 reported case for every 250,000 square metres (2,500,000 square feet) of perforated window film sold.

The main risk is thermal stress caused by differential expansion between adjacent areas of the glass. This normally occurs because sunlight heats the central area of windows, but the edges are shaded. The most important factor is the type and quality of the glass. Tempered/toughened glass is unlikely to give any problems because it has very high edge strength and thicker glass is also better. The edge strength of glass can be compromised by small imperfections such as “inclusions” (foreign matter) and how it was cut and treated by the glazier. Other contributory factors include the level of external and internal shading.

Normal window films (non-perforated) are known to increase the risk of thermal stress because they absorb a higher level of solar energy than the glass on its own. The risk is likely to be reduced if a perforated window film is used. This is because the holes help to reduce the relative temperature change and consequent thermal expansion that would take place with the same graphic on a solid substrate. Avoiding dark colors (which absorb more heat) will also reduce the risk.

A thermal stress fracture is easy to spot. One end of the fracture will be in contact with the edge of the window, in a line of about 2-3cm (1 inch), which is a right angle to the edge of the glass. The crack can then deviate in any direction from there.

Contra Vision perforated window films are adhesive-coated calendered PVC, presented on a paper-based, silicone coated liner. The PVC complies with European REACH standards, so does not contain the undesirable substances often found in other PVC products.

Our understanding is that the silicone-coated paper and PVC elements of Contra Vision perforated products cannot practically be recycled. However, energy used in the manufacturing of the products can be recovered through appropriate incineration (WtE).
We are researching ways of recycling our products.

For our perforated products please follow this guidelines related to internal and external applications.
For our non-perforated products please follow our guidelines concerning our mirrored film and frosted film.
