What is International Women’s Day?
Happy International Women’s Day 2021!
Each year on March 8th, the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women globally are celebrated. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women’s achievements or rally for women’s equality.
This theme of the day this year is ‘Choose to Challenge‘ which means that from challenge comes change, so let’s all choose to challenge the gender bias and inequality we see in the world. We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women’s achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world. That is why every day this week we are highlighting a valued and inspirational woman who is part of the Contra Vision team.
Meet Viktorija Ustinova
Q. Can you tell me a bit about your career history before you began working for Contra Vision?
A. I started my career 10 years ago when I was studying International Business and Management at university in Lithuania. My first job was as a manager assistant in home décor store. It was first my experience in customer service. A couple of years after I moved to live in the UK and accepted a new challenge.
I joined Alpha LSG the catering company in Manchester airport, started working with international airlines, control the stock of inflight equipment, liaising with overseas suppliers and customers. I have gained a great experience and more knowledge about international business in that position.
Q. How long have you worked for and what is your role at Contra Vision?
A. I joined Contra Vision in 2015 as Customer Service and Logistics Coordinator. My current role is Global Logistics Leader.
Q. Have you ever felt held back in your career or you have not been given certain opportunities because of your gender?
A. Personally, I think I am lucky enough as this is something I have not experienced, as I have always been supported by both genders in both personal and professional life.
Q. What progress have you seen on gender equality in your life and in work?
A. The world has changed and of course women gained more rights nowadays. However, it still feels men’s opinion has more power, their ideas and suggestions are taken onboard with more weight than a women’s. As I say, the world listens to women but not always hears them. I really hope we will witness a bigger progress in the world, especially now when we live in pandemic.
Q. Why do we need women in leadership positions?
A. Women in leadership roles improve profitability, performance and productivity. Women think, see and do things differently – this is the way to success.
Q. How do you feel men in your life and in workplaces can contribute more to women’s empowerment?
A. In my opinion great results can be achieved if there is a support and encouragement, both are essential in daily life. I know from my own experience how it is important to hear ‘you can do’, ‘share your ideas’, ‘you are doing amazing’. This makes you feel valuable and motivate you to act.
Q. Do you have any words of wisdom for women at the start of their careers?
Love what you do. Never give up. Work hard. Dream big. Believe in yourself. Treat others as you would like to be treated.
