Follow this four-stage cleaning process to ensure the adhesive bonds properly and the final result is smooth and long-lasting:

• Initial Inspection & Debris Removal
  Start by inspecting the glass thoroughly. Remove visible adhesive, dust, and debris using the least aggressive cleaning solution possible. Harsh chemicals may damage the surface, so opt for gentle solvents where possible.
• Alcohol-Based Solvent Wipe
  Use a clean cloth and an alcohol-based solvent to clear any invisible residues. This step is crucial for eliminating oils or other contaminants that could interfere with adhesion.
• Soap & Water Wash
  Next, wash the glass with mild soap and water. Be thorough, especially if more aggressive cleaners were used previously. Dry completely before moving on.
• Final Rinse
  Rinse with clean water to remove any soap or residue. This final step ensures the glass is ready for the film and free from any lingering cleaning agents.

Bonus tip:

Double check all areas that will be covered are clean, especially the edges! Something may look clean, but that doesn’t mean it actually is.

 

Step 2: Application: How to wrap a vehicle with perforated window film

Here are some steps to follow:

• Avoid Touching the Adhesive: Handling the adhesive surface can weaken its effectiveness.
• Use the Right Tools: A hard-edged squeegee is ideal. Felt-edged tools are discouraged because they can deform into the perforations, smearing adhesive or damaging the print.
• Apply Light, Then Firm Pressure: Begin with gentle squeegee strokes to position the film. Once aligned, increase pressure to secure it.
• Avoid Slip-Aids or Surfactants: These interfere with adhesion and can compromise the quality of the installation.
• Primers: You may use a primer for added grip, but only after ensuring the glass is clean and testing the primer’s compatibility with the film.

For moderately curved or plastic surfaces like acrylic, the film may adhere but always test in advance—adhesion might not be as strong as on flat glass.

Step 3: Trimming: Achieving the perfect quality vehicle wrap

Once the film is applied, it’s time to trim with care. This is where many installs go wrong—but you can avoid common issues by following these guidelines:

• Check for Adhesion: Wherever possible, inspect behind the film to confirm it’s fully bonded to the glass. Look for squeegee marks or silvering (air pockets) and smooth them out.

Bonus tip:

Applying edge-sealing tape is strongly recommended, especially at the corners. It helps prevent water and dirt intrusion, extending the life of the installation.

If using Edge-Sealing Tape, trim the film to 8mm/1/3” from the edge. The sealing tape should end about 3mm/1/8” from the edge.

Step 4: Final Finish: Completing your vehicle wrap

You’re nearly there, but the job isn’t finished just yet:

• Inspect All Edges: Make sure every edge and seam is secure. Use a squeegee to reinforce where needed.
• Remove Excess Film: Clean up any overhanging material for a neat, professional appearance.
• Seal and Protect: Double-check that all seams are sealed. This helps avoid premature lifting or damage.
• Hold Off on Washing: The best way to clean a wrapped vehicle? Wait at least 24 hours before cleaning the graphic. For over-laminated film, skip the pressure washer—use a cold water fan-lance on a low setting instead.

You could opt to place some liner on top of the film when doing a final pass with the squeegee, to avoid accidentally marking the film.
