Airport Advertising Tips

Targeting travellers at an airport is an excellent option for advertising. There are many high foot traffic areas, allowing your advert to be seen by a lot of people.

Airport advertising is very effective as it targets people with usually long wait times before they board or while they are waiting for their bags. Because of this, people tend to be more open-minded and receptive to advertisements around the airport.

Possible Places for Airport Advertising

Multiple places in and outside of an airport are great for advertising. Some are more common than others however, all these options are high-foot traffic areas and can increase awareness of your brand/business.

Airport Shuttles

While getting to and from the plane or from departures to the terminals, airport shuttles are full of advertisements. This includes advertisements inside the bus or transit wraps, similar to what is often on trams.

Duty-Free and Terminals

Using static or digital posters, areas such as Duty-Free and terminals are great places to advertise, especially if you want to advertise a product. According to Airport Advertising Media, 69% of travellers plan to have 30 minutes or more to visit airport stores and 86% of travellers visit at least one store. The most popular advertising types include digital screens, lightboxes and hanging signs.

Lounges

As people relax and chill out before a long flight, airport lounges are ideal places for airport advertising. Because people who visit airport lounges are a bit more relaxed, this makes people more receptive to advertisements.

The Free WI-FI

Nowadays, the majority of airports offer free WI-FI. Businesses can use this to their advantage by adding advertisements when people are connecting to the WI-FI or by pushing SMS messages and notifications to devices, these tend to include deals about products that people can buy in Duty-Free.

Walkways and Escalator Graphics

Quickly grabbing people’s attention, walkway and escalator graphics can easily and quickly get your message across. However, with this type of advertising, there is a size limitation but this can play to your advantage. These are commonly used to direct people to a shop, restaurant or where they can buy a product.

Lift Graphics

Another way to quickly capture people’s attention is elevator graphics. Advertisements are available to be put both inside and outside the lift. Adding an ad near the buttons on the elevator is more likely to get people’s attention.

Window & Building Graphics

Grab the passenger’s attention with a window graphic. Placed both in and outside the airport, these window graphics are easily spotted and can’t really be missed. Examples of airport window graphics are our seasonal graphic at Heathrow Terminal 2 and building wrap at Toronto Pearson Airport.

At Contra Vision, we can help you with your airport advertisements. Our one-way vision window graphics can be used for a variety of in-store campaigns from elevator shafts to airport shuttles.

There are a few tips and tricks you can use to get the most out of airport advertising, these include:

  1. Adding rewards and discounts can go a long way to bring your potential customers back.
  2. Brand partnerships are important. Airports can partner with retailers and food & drink companies. They can also offer a unique buying experience called aeroplane-to-gate. This allows people to shop while in the air and pick up their items at the gate.
  3. Increase customer engagement. While your customers are shopping, ask them to take photos and share their experiences online and through social media.
  4. Try to keep up with passengers. Although passengers are constantly on the move, try and catch them at the right moment by placing your ads where it would be most effective and in the view of a lot of people.
  5. Appeal to multiple senses. Passengers can receive ads better that mimic their travel choices. According to Bishopp, 73% of passengers that travel often say that they take time to read e airport advertisements.
